Dear friends, don't be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you.1 Peter 4:12 NLT
Trials really shouldn’t take us by surprise. God’s Word consistently reminds us of this. Jesus even warned us of impending trials. In John 16:33 Jesus said, “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.” In my ministry I have lots of opportunities to talk with people during the trials of life. The most often asked question is “Why”.
“Why is this happening to me?”
“Why would God allow this?”
Those questions are normal and I don’t think there is anything wrong with asking them, but the tone of the question may need to be considered. For instance, I think it is completely okay for me to ask “why”, even of God, but perhaps I shouldn’t ask in a tone that implies surprise. The Bible has warned us that trials will come.
Maybe the correct approach then, in the midst of a trial, is to ask “why” with the intent of learning something from the trial. If trials are going to come, and they are, then what can we learn through the trial? Let’s try that approach the next time we ask “why?”.
