I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13 NIV
Louie (not his real name) had become a believer recently. A friend had shared Christ with him and it made sense to him. He realized the void in his life and readily prayed to accept Christ. My friend referred him to me because he still had questions. When I met with him and he revealed his concerns I was not surprised. Louie was concerned that his was not a real conversion experience because he had not experienced a radical “feeling” in his life. There was no shouting, no jumping up and down, no dancing in the aisles.
I have heard this concern before. Some people are prone to look for feelings as validation of an experience. I must say, sometimes I have seen this happen. I remember a man in Brazil last year that jumped up and down when he prayed to accept Christ. Sometimes, however, there is no immediate display of emotion. There is, of course a change, because you are a new creation” but that may or may not be an emotional experience.
Salvation is a fact. God’s Word is true. Romans 10:9 which says that if you “confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”, is not based on a feeling, but on a fact. If you confess and believe you are saved. You may not feel saved, but you are saved if you really confessed and really believed. The evidence will not be in your feelings, but in the fruit that is displayed in your life over time.
If you have been doubting your salvation because of feelings, I want to encourage you to go back to the facts of God’s Word. Have you done what the Scripture says is required for salvation? Have you trusted Christ as your Savior and is it your sincere desire to please Him? Then you are saved; whether you feel like it or not!
Praise God His salvation is not based on how we “feel” each day. Some of us would have many days separated from Him.
