I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.

I Am Found In You by Steven Curtis Chapman
The Potter, Part 10

These can be counted on, but not my people! For they have deserted me and turned to worthless idols. They have stumbled off the ancient highways of good, and they walk the muddy paths of sin. Therefore, their land will become desolate, a monument to their stupidity. All who pass by will be astonished and shake their heads in amazement at its utter desolation. I will scatter my people before their enemies as the east wind scatters dust. And in all their trouble I will turn my back on them and refuse to notice their distress."

Jeremiah 18:15-17 NLT

I love these verses, because they so clearly illustrate what choosing to live our life outside of God’s will really is. If you and I operate on an agenda contrary to God’s agenda, we are creating a “monument of stupidity”.

Using that terminology and looking back over my life, there is no way I could name all the “monuments of stupidity” I have had over the years. The times I have walked away from God’s plan, chosen sin over righteousness, rejected God’s perfect will have all proven to be senseless acts. The times I have rejected my will and chosen God’s plan, even though at the time it may not have made sense or been comfortable to do, have proven every time to be the correct route for me to take. My experience is that God’s way truly is the best way.

How many “monuments of stupidity” do you have? Are you building one even today? Are you following your own agenda over God’s agenda? Are you rejecting the plan of God for your life? Do you know God is calling you to something, maybe to end an unhealthy relationship, begin a new ministry, give more generously, trust more deeply, but so far, you’ve said “no” to God’s call? Is this going to be proven as a “monument of stupidity”?

Perhaps you need to, like me, examine the potential “monuments to stupidity” in your life and break them down before they cause greater harm in your life. Maybe we need to place our lives on the “Potter’s wheel”, realizing that the end product of our life is in God’s hand, and submit to God’s daily plan for our life. Will you pray this prayer: Dear God, here is my life. I want it to be obedient to you and completely within your will. Help me to live according to your plan for my life. Mold me into who you want me to be. In Jesus name, Amen.
