I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Matthew 6:9

Yesterday we worked to examine the fact that the God of this universe, who we, the children of God, know as Father, is permanently fixed in Heaven. Today, let’s consider the place where God resides: Heaven.

Heaven is defined in a Biblical sense simply as “the eternal dwelling place of God”. You and I are one day going to live with God in Heaven. Essentially that means we are going to dwell with God where He dwells. To “dwell” means more than just to live somewhere. You can have a houseguest live with you for a while, but they may never really feel a whole part of the family. When someone dwells in the home, they have equal rights with every family member.

Heaven is a mystery to us right now, because, in a sense, it is another dimension beyond our comprehension. Jesus said He went to “prepare a place for us”. He is shaping us for a permanent place in Heaven. The Bible says that "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him" (1 Cor 2:9) Heaven is a place far greater than we could ever imagine. The Book of Revelation says there “no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." It is in Heaven where God will, once and for all, “wipe every tear” from our eyes. Heaven is a unique and special place.

Paul, during his Damascus road experience, appears to have seen a glimpse of Heaven. In speaking of his responsibilities for the Gospel and his desire to be with Christ in Heaven he wrote in Philippians , “I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far”. Paul knew that Heaven was going to be worth it all.

Are you excited about Heaven? Are you looking forward to dwelling with God?

I keep my house fairly cool all year. I always know when someone feels comfortable in my home when they kick their shoes off, grab a blanket, and sits comfortably on my couch. I especially know they are feeling at home when they help themselves to the refrigerator. I can’t wait to get Home to Heaven and really dwell. I’m going to kick my shoes off, grab a blanket, and curl up on an eternal couch somewhere and rest. First though, I think I’ll check out the ‘fridge’!
