I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.
I Am Found In You

This is what He showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. And the LORD asked me, "What do you see, Amos?" "A plumb line," I replied. Then the Lord said, "Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer. Amos 7:7-8 NIV
The few times I have tried to draw a straight line, I lost my patience and either quit, or went and got a ruler. When it comes to any kind of art, I am not your man. I am always impressed with those who can make a pencil go where they want it to.
God once used a ruler to draw a straight line. No, He didn't literally, at least to my knowledge, get a ruler, but He used the straight edge of His law to measure the righteousness of His people. He created a plumb line, His standard for excellence, and looked to see how His children lined up. What He saw was not too impressive. The Israelites were out of line.
God's plumb line today is Jesus. He is still holding people to that high standard. Of course there is no one righteous before God; all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, but God still desires for us to look like Jesus.
So, throughout the pages of our life, God orchestrates situations which draw us closer to Him. He fashions and molds us into the character of His Son through life altering events which force us to call upon Him, and help us to realize we cannot make it in life without His strength.
The plumb line will be used again to judge the unrighteous who live apart from Christ, but for the Christian, the plumb line now serves only to help us focus on who we should be. "Let this mind be in you, that is also in Christ Jesus".
Look at the plumb line today. Look at Jesus!
