"Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life." John 3:14-15 NIV
Are you familiar with the symbol used to recognize the medical profession? You've seen it before; the staff with two snakes circling it. That symbol has a Biblical reference. Jesus was referring to that reference in today's verse.
If you remember, in Numbers chapter 21, God had allowed venomous snakes among the people, because of their sin. Many people died, but then God allowed a cure. God told Moses to make a bronze snake on a pole and hold it up in the air. Anyone who looked at the snake would be healed. And, therefore, the medical profession symbol is understandable. Where you see this symbol you know you can find answers to your health needs. (Praise God for the medical profession of our day!)
Understanding this, do you now understand what Jesus was saying? Just as the staff with snakes on it points to a place for physical healing, Jesus, placed on a cross, high and lifted up, points to the place for SPIRITUAL healing. When you see the cross, you are reminded that at the cross their is victory over death. At the cross there is victory over pain and suffering. At the cross their is rest and healing for your weary soul.
Praise God for the healing symbol of the cross!
