I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.
I Am Found In You

Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:3-4 NIV
Today we look at the second part of our quest to discover how God gives us the desires of our heart. Yesterday we saw that we must “trust in the Lord”. Today the verse tells us to “do good”. I remember as a college student, in a fraternity, we had a creed. It said that we should be “men of good character”. We discussed that term “good” and realized that good is a relative term. How good is good? When we are told to trust in the Lord and do good, we aren’t given the parameters with which to work either.
I recall that Jesus is known as the “Good Shepherd”. How good is that good? We are instructed to be filled with joy and be of “good cheer”. How good is that good? The Bible says no one is “good” referrring to our sinful nature. Surely some of us are “good”, at least by the world’s standards, so what does this word mean? How are we to “do good”?
In the Biblical sense, I believe this word good refers to perfection. This good is really, really good. We might even call it great! This verse is essentially telling us to “Trust in the Lord and….be perfect”. Now, I know what you are thinking, who can do that apart from Jesus Himself? But, that may very well be how I would answer the question. No one can be good by his or her own ability. Jesus told us to abide in Him so that we could bear much fruit. He said that apart from Him we could do nothing.
We become “good” when we become like Jesus. We become like Jesus, more and more each day, just as we learn to trust Him more and more each day. We do so by learning to abide daily. It is a process, which sometimes takes years, but as we progressively learn to trust the Lord and do good, we will begin more and more seeing God grant us the desires of our heart.
