Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:3-4 NIV
We will use the same text all week. God has impressed upon my heart that we really like to focus on these two verses. It is not the first part of the verses, however, that we enjoy. It is the last portion where we get “the desires of your heart”. We like God to answer our desires. This Psalm contains a promise, but it is a conditional promise. We’ll consider those conditions this week.
The first condition is to “Trust in the Lord”. One year ago I surveyed the Sunday School class I teach on where they were in their relationship to Christ. Recently I went through those responses again to see, from my perspective, how we had progressed as a class spiritually. I must say we have seen substantial growth. One thing that caught my attention was the consistency of comments from class members. Out of the 53 responses I received, when asked, “what is one area of your spiritual life in which you would like to grow?” the largest item requested was that they wanted to learn to “trust God more”. They wanted their faith to grow. Most of those responded that way were going through a personal trial at the time. I suspect that survey would have similar results if taken in most any church.
Are you having a hard time trusting the Lord? When you find it hard to trust someone, would you say you have a strong relationship with that person? Isn’t trust a huge factor in developing a close intimacy with someone? How can we expect to be intimate with the Lord if we still find it hard to trust Him? Do we not trust Him because He hasn’t proven worthy of our trust, or is it because to really trust Him, the way He requires would involve us giving up control of our lives?
If we want God to grant the desires of our heart, we must learn to trust Him. That’s what faith is; trusting in God; even when we don’t know how, when or where He is going to work in our lives. Trust involves resting fully in the sufficiency of Christ in our lives; allowing Him to direct all our paths.
