Once when Jesus was praying in private and His disciples were with Him, He asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?" Luke 9:18 NIV
I spent the weekend in New York recently. I love big cities, and very small towns. I guess that makes me versatile (maybe you can think of a better description). When I think of crowds, I easily think of New York. Macy's at Christmas...now that's a crowd.
I found myself on one occassion, as I rode the escalator to one of the 10 floors of the shopper's paradise, what all the crowds were thinking. Here they were buying "Christmas" presents and yet I wondered if they had a clue who was to be the guest of honor at this birthday party.
This weekend I'm going to a basketball game. Guess what? More crowds!
I wonder if they will know who the Christ is?
You know what, I'm not sure. I don't really know what the crowds are thinking, or saying. And, in fact, the responses are probably much like the disciples gave to Jesus. "Some say a great man, others a prophet, still others a Savior."
If you know the story, then you also know that Jesus asked another question, and I think this question was what Jesus really wanted to know. He asked, "Who do YOU say that I am?"
See, that is the question whose answer determines Heaven or Hell. That is the life or death question. That is the question of the day!
Because what you do with Jesus will determine your eternity!
No matter what the crowds may say!
