One of the first times I was on the mission field in Brazil I heard the term “man of peace”. I knew the story of today’s Bible passage, but I had never really thought about a modern day man of peace. The term came up in Brazil as we entered a village with unfriendly inhabitants. The “man of peace” was a well-respected, gentle man. He walked us through the streets. When we were with him the people willingly opened their doors. He led the way to allow us to share the Gospel.
As a church planter, I’ve learned that men (and women) of peace are all around today. They are the ones who can get me into see someone who wouldn’t normally ever want to see a “pastor”. They are the ones who live close to people. They are well-liked; powerful because of the relationships and respect among people they have developed over the years.
Men of peace are not always believers. In fact, some of the best I’ve known were still searching for meaning to life themselves, but for whatever reason, they are willing to open doors for people like me. My job is made easier (or possible at all), because of men of peace. Here’s a key principle; sometimes I have to get out of the church and the comforts of being surrounded by like-minded believers to find a man of peace.
Jesus understood this principle. I’m learning it.
