They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey Him!"

Mark 4:41 NIV

Who is this? When God calms your storm, you’ll be asking the same question. God is still amazing people today! The disciples had a life-changing encounter with the Living God and they would never be the same.

There is a truth in this story that quite frankly I had never seen before, until I started preparing for this series. If the disciples had really taken Jesus at His Word, they would have never been afraid.

Do you recall when Abraham was called of God to sacrifice his only son Isaac? (Genesis 22) Abraham had been promised by God that he would be the father of many nations and that it was going to happen through Isaac. Isaac had yet to produce a child. If his life would have ended on that mountain, it would seem that God’s promise would have been broken. Abraham didn’t know how God was going to keep His promise, but He believed the Word of God. The Bible says that faith was “credited to him as righteousness”. That was the kind of faith God was looking for in the hearts of man.

When Jesus called the disciples what did He promise to make them? Fishers of men, right? (Mark 1:17) Jesus had promised to turn these fishermen into fishers OF men. Do you realize that when this furious squall came into the life of the disciples (Mark 4) that they had not yet been released to go and fish for men? That doesn’t occur until later. (Mark 6:7) The disciples may not have been able to understand how Jesus was going to keep His promise, but if they had taken Him fully at His Word, they would have known that there was still something for them to do, and that Jesus would somehow deliver them through the storm.

You and I have lots of promises from God. It doesn’t matter as much that we know them if we don’t believe them. If we don’t believe that God is going to work all things for good or that He will never leave us nor forsake us, then it really won’t matter if we know those promises or not, will it? The essence of a Biblical faith is believing the promises of God when we don't know when or how He will deliver on those promises.

Dear friend, if you are going through a furious squall, you need to start finding the promises of God, and then, by faith, accepting and believing they are true in your life. (Start with Psalm 23, 25 and 27) You may not know how or when, but you can know WHO, and you can know that He is going to do what He has promised to do! You can face the storms of life in confidence, because God’s promises are still true in your life. Oh, my friend, what a joy it will be when we believe the Word of God and act accordingly.
