Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" Mark 4:38 NIV
To fully understand the truth of this verse you have to know and believe that Jesus was fully man and fully God. Being fully God meant that Jesus knew the storm was coming. Being fully man meant that Jesus got tired and needed sleep. Jesus knew the storm was coming, yet when it came, instead of panicking like the disciples, Jesus was taking a nap. The question is: How could Jesus sleep in the midst of a furious squall?
When I was a small child we used to take long trips in the car. Once I remember riding with my mother and aunt to Kansas. My brother and I were in the back seat asleep. Suddenly a loud scream woke me up! My mother and aunt were alarmed at the tremendous storm that had forced them to stop the car. Shortly after I woke up the storm was over. I had missed the worst of the storm. How could I sleep through the storm? Because I was trusting in the people in the front seat. Jesus knew the storm was coming and even the severity of that storm, but Jesus also knew the Person who was guiding the boat through the storm.
One thing more, the disciples asked Jesus a serious question: “Don’t you care if we drown?” Have you ever asked God if He cares? That’s okay. God understands. Sometimes life makes fragile people feel very fragile. But, the disciples didn’t realize that Jesus could sleep, because Jesus knew everything was going to be okay.
When you and I realize that God truly is in control and He really is working all things for good, we will be able to, like Jesus, rest in the midst of the storm. How are you sleeping at night? Why not rest with the One who is in ultimate control of the storms of life!
