I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.

I Am Found In You by Steven Curtis Chapman
Psalm 42:1

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, O God. Psalms 42:1 NIV

For the past year I have traveled about an hour from my home every Sunday to pastor a church. The drive takes me through some of the most beautiful countryside I have ever seen. As dangerous as it can be, one of the more pleasant experiences has been seeing the deer along the side of the road. Sometimes they dart in front of me and I find myself wondering where the deer go in such a hurry. On one of these recent adventures, I watched the deer as they headed across the street, then into the field on the other side of the road, and to the stream that runs through the field. I suppose the deer were thirsty!

I wonder if that is the connotation the Psalmist meant in today’s verse. Had he witnessed deer in such a frenzy to find water? Had he seen the anticipation of a deer who was heading to quench its thirst? I’m not sure exactly what correlation the Psalmist was making to deer in their search for streams of water, but I’m fairly certain he was saying that He had a deep thirst for God.

The deer I witnessed risked everything to get to water. I could have hit them with my car. The deer could have gotten hung up in the fence along the road? At that moment in the life of those deer alone Highway 79, the only thing that really mattered was water.

As you begin a new year, what matters most in your life? What do you need most? Run to the God who cares for you more than you can imagine. Develop a passion for Him so great that you will be like the deer who panted for water. Let your soul thirst for God!
