Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do. Proverbs 4:23 NLT
If the heart is so important in issues of relationships and life, and it is, then you and I must do whatever it takes to protect the heart. Today's verse is quickly becoming one of my favorites and certainly one of the most applied in my life and in my ministry. The heart is so important. As the verse says, "it affects everything you do". If you are in a bad relationship you know that it is affecting every aspect of your life. If you want to make life better again you better protect your own heart whatever the cost.
Satan loves to destroy a good relationship. He loves to break up homes and marriages, turn children away from their parents, and remind people of how they were wronged by another person so they have a hard time offering forgiveness. If Satan notices one heart turning sour to a relationship, he will surely begin to work on the other person's heart as well. I do not believe that Satan has power over a person's heart, like God does, but he knows how to influence a heart. He knows how to bring temptation to the heart. He knows the areas of weaknesses of each person and he cleverly uses them to his advantage. We must guard against the devil and his attack on our heart.
How do we protect our heart? We feed it with truth found in the pages of God's Word. We surround our heart with people who love the Lord and will encourage our heart. We call out to God with our heart and yield our heart and will each day to God. It is not easy protecting something as fragile as a heart, but since the core of life's battles is in the heart, we have no choice but to protect it daily!
