The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Proverbs 1:7 NIV
Today we begin a series of devotionals on some of my favorite Proverbs.
Call me a fool, because there are many times (probably most times) when I do not like discipline. I’m okay with wisdom, but I don’t like the stringent process to gain wisdom. I want it to come naturally, not through years of trials and experience; which is how I’ve attained most of my wisdom. I just pretty much never like discipline.
What about you? Do you like to be disciplined or do you run from it as much as I do? This year I’m trying to bring more discipline to my spiritual life. I don’t want to be legalistic, but I recognize that if I don’t spend time with God’s Word on a regular basis; if I’m not praying like I should, my relationship with Christ will grow stale. I certainly don’t want that. I want a vibrant relationship with God. Every strong relationship I have ever had in my life has required work to make it stay that way.
What discipline do you need to bring into your life so that you can have more wisdom, a deeper walk with Christ, or be more obedient to God’s will for your life? That’s probably not near as important as this next question. Are you willing to submit to the required discipline in order to achieve the desired results?
