After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before.
Job 42:8 NIV
Prayer works! I don't always know how or understand why, but time and time again, God has proven to me that He does respond to the prayers of His people. God is the One who is fully able to meet our desires, and when we line our desires up with His sovereign will, we see tremendous, often miraculous results. In fact, everything God does is a miracle, because His ways are so much higher than ours.
Job had seen rough days. God (yes God) had allowed the Devil to bring pain and suffering to Job. He lost all his possessions and children, and then was afflicted himself with terrible pain. His friends and even his wife encouraged him to curse God. Job remained loyal to God and, when he turns to pray for his friends, a most awesome act of humility, God changed his pain into triumph, and gave him far more than he ever had before. If you don't know the story, READ IT!
I believe God responds to our prayers, not because He needs our suggestions for improvement in our life, not so that we can gloat about having a great prayer life, but because He wants us to fully recognize the power of the One who hears and answers prayers. God wants the glory!
Now, let me be quick to tell you that I don't believe in a "name it and claim it" theology. There are times, for His own reasons, (usually to advance our character) God says no to our prayers. However, I do believe though that we are, most of the time, missing out on the blessings of life because we fail to ask. Didn't Jesus say something like that?
