Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. Matthew 5:3 NIV
I can almost hear the naysayers: "Why would anyone want to be poor in spirit?" "I want my spirit to be rich." "What a loser!"
Let me try to be gentle with those who interpret this verse that way: ..W..R..O..N..G..
Jesus is telling us that to give up self, to give up our own agenda, will gain us something that will far outweigh anything we could achieve for ourself on Earth. The blessings of Heaven are greater than all the self accomplished goals we can ever attain.
Now that doesn't mean that we should have no ambition or that we have no abilities. But, didn't Jesus, Himself, say that apart from Him we can do nothing?
To be poor in spirit requires us to humble ourselves, placing our goals, agendas and ambitions within the will of the Father. We are to consistently seek His direction for our life. He is to be our Master Guide.
To be poor in spirit is to be rich in mercy and grace. God grants His favor where it will give Him glory and honor. God is looking for a place to spread His glory throughout the souls of His people.
To be poor in spirit will actually refresh our spirit and draw us inot the awesome presence of the Father. In the Father there is peace and joy. (Could you use a little peace and joy in your life today?)
It is not an insult....today...with the help of the Holy Spirit...be poor in spirit....the kingdom of Heaven will be yours.
That's the best offer I have...but believe me...it's the best offer!
