I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.
I Am Found In You

Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you out without purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. Luke 22:35 NIV
To understand what Jesus is asking the disciples in today's verse, we must go back to Luke chapter 10, verse 4. In Luke 10, Jesus is sending out the seventy-two followers to spread the Good News. As they go, He tells them not to carry anything with them, but to trust the Lord for everything they need. When they return to Him, as we read later in that same chapter, they were filled with joy, realizing that even the demons submitted to them.
I recall another experience the disciples had early in their ministry with Christ. The day had been filled with the teachings of Christ to thousands of people. It was getting late in the day and there was not enough food to eat. The disciples urged Jesus to send the people home. Jesus asked the disciples, "how many loaves do you have?". It wasn't that Jesus needed to know. He was going to do the miracle anyway. He just wanted them to know how great a miracle He could do!
Or the time Jesus MADE the disciples get into the boat. A furious storm came up, but Jesus was asleep. The disciples try to wake Him so He could help bail water. They didn't realize then, that Jesus had control even over the wind and the waves.
Look back at today's scripture. Can you understand the point Jesus is making now? Towards the end of the earthly ministry of Christ, He tries to make His disciples understand that with Him they have all that they need. With Jesus in our lives, nothing else is necessary.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I am not saying life will be easy. It wasn't after this point for the disciples. But, life will be richer, full of more joy, and end in a more triumphant victory, with a greater appreciation for God and all of His glory, if we will trust Him completely each step of every day!
Can't you hear Jesus asking you today, "Did you lack anything?"
