I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.

I Am Found In You by Steven Curtis Chapman
Mourning, Part 4
By: Ron Edmondson Thursday, January 16, 2003
Absalom fled and went to Talmai son of Ammihud, the king of Geshur. But King David mourned for his son every day. 2 Samuel 13:37 NIV

Mourning may be the proper response to a loved one who has gone astray. I often receive requests for prayer because someone’s child is no longer walking close to the Lord. I have received countless requests from a husband or wife whose spouse has walked away from the relationship and is ready to give up on the marriage. Maybe we should spend more time mourning for such situations.

Mourning, much like fasting, as we read about it in the Bible, is a time set aside for a specific purpose. When someone died, there was a time for specific heart-healing to occur. As we saw yesterday, Nehemiah “mourned” for days over the sins of the people, seeking the heart of God in the matter. David, we are told in today’s verse, mourned for his son who had gone astray. Mourning serves the purpose of allowing time for our heart to heal after we have had a significant emotional blow or we are faced with a daunting task or haunting news.

In our world where we try to get everything to move near the speed of light, we often don’t take enough time to mourn. I think we may have lost the Biblical concept. It may be missing in our emotional and spiritual life. Do you have a need for which you could use a little mourning? Why not take some time away from the stress of life and mourn? Spend the time reflecting on God’s heart, your emptiness, and His ability to fill it! I’m not calling you into depression, just a real reflection time on the heart of God; a time where you allow Him, and Him alone, to heal your heart.

(As a side note, I think a lot of the depression of the world today may be because we force people back into the “normal routine” too fast and do not allow them to properly mourn.)
