I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.

I Am Found In You by Steven Curtis Chapman
Mourning, Part 3
By: Ron Edmondson Wednesday, January 15, 2003
When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. Nehemiah 1:4 NIV

When Nehemiah heard the status of the Jewish nation he sat down, wept, and mourned. Mourning was his natural response to observing the sin of his nation. If you continue to read Nehemiah chapter one you see Nehemiah’s prayer recorded. He confesses the sin of the people before God and asks for God’s hand once again. Nehemiah’s time of mourning was to seek God’s forgiveness.

Have you ever mourned over sin? I think we as a people have grown, as the Bible describes in the last days to being “lovers of self”. We don’t mourn for sin as we once did because that would make us confront and deal with our own sin. We have grown accustomed, even tolerant of sin, because, quite frankly, we often enjoy parts of the lifestyle ourselves. The more in tune we are with a holy God the more sin will become distasteful to us.

Recently I heard a joke that was going around that many found humorous. The joke involved infidelity. While it may be a funny subject to some, to many the subject involves great heartache. To God it is an abomination! If we are going to share the heart of God, shouldn’t it be to us as well?

Dear friends, where are the mourners of our day? I believe this may be what Jesus was referring to when He said “blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted”. Those who mourn over sin and the frailties of living in a fallen world will indeed be comforted when God brings His righteousness to the earth!

Oh, let us mourn over sin! Let us mourn over the fact that many are separated from a righteous God. Let us mourn over the sin in our own lives! And, let us be comforted by God!
