I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.

I Am Found In You by Steven Curtis Chapman
Mother-in Law
By: Ron Edmondson Friday, January 21, 2000
When Jesus came into Peter's house, He saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. Matthew 8:14 NIV

This may seem like an obscure verse with which to begin today's Mustard Seed. No, it really has nothing to do with mother-in-laws. I've learned to leave some subjects alone. I do hope, however, that we can learn a few valuable lessons from this part of God's Holy word.

First, this verse teaches us that Peter had a house. Often we view the disciples as being homeless. We might see Peter as being a fisherman who lived at sea. The fact was that Peter had roots. He had a real home, roof in all, in which to sleep at night. This should remind us that the disciples were real people, just like you and me.

Second, we see that Peter had a mother-in-law. If you are starting to catch on then you realize that in order to have a mother-in-law Peter must have had a wife. If you can figure that out, then you might also assume that Peter had a family; kids, dogs, cats, etc.

So, what's my point. You see, if you and I fail to see Peter, and the rest of the disciples, as real people, just like you and me, with families, jobs, responsibilities, and yes, even mother-in-laws, then we are missing a very important lesson about their sacrifice. In order to serve Christ, Peter gave up more than just a fishing boat. He gave up spending nights with his wife, his kids, and yes, even his nother-in-law.

The disciples gave up much so that they might follow Christ. My question then is this: What are you and I willing to give?
