I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.

Therefore, obey all these commands, laws, and regulations I am giving you today.

Deuteronomy 7:11 NLT

The Israelites were given the Ten Commandments. There would be many other “rules” to come, but these were absolutely the most important. I honestly believe if they had kept these ten rules, the others might not have been necessary.

As parents we need some non-negotiable rules of our home. These are the rules that cannot be altered I tend to let these be moral or Biblical issues, such as lying, cheating, disrespect, etc. When these rules are clearly in place, you and I can major on the majors. We can concentrate on seeing that our children obey these rules, and, if they are, we can be more flexible on the other rules we have in our household.

I currently see my boys making wise decisions with their life. They are honest, respectful, and good moral teenagers. Because of this, I am being much more flexible with things such as whether or not they cleaned their room. I’m trying not to criticize them constantly for things that really don’t matter in the long run. It doesn’t mean I don’t want a clean room. It just means that is less important than their character.

I sense God parents us the same. He cares less about whether we have our houses clean or not, and more about whether our hearts are pure and clean.
