I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.

I Am Found In You by Steven Curtis Chapman

And just as there are different kinds of seeds and plants, so also there are different kinds of flesh--whether of humans, animals, birds, or fish. 1 Corinthians 15:39 NLT

If you have more than one child, then you already know that God didn’t use a “cookie cutter” approach when He formed each of them. All children are different. I hear that said all the time, but I’m not sure we recognize the fact when it comes to raising children. It is unfair to our children if we always treat them as if they are the same.

What if I bought each of my children the “same” tennis shoes for their birthday, for example? In order to really be “fair” I bought them the same color, cost…and SIZE. Would that make sense? Of course it would not be fair. One of them will have shoes that don’t fit! Just as you can’t buy the same size tennis shoes, one-size does not “fit all” in how we raise our children either. You need a different plan for each different child.

You and I should recognize the individuality of each child. Some children require more structure than others do. Make sure the rules and guidelines set are appropriate for the needs of the child. We have one child, for example, that we really have to make sure gets to bed on time. If he doesn’t, he’ll not function well in school the next day. With the other child we don’t have to stress quite so much if he’s a short time after his bedtime. This isn’t being unfair to the one. It’s recognizing his individual needs.

God made us all different. I think He applies His grace as we need it more. (“As sin increases, grace increases all the more.” Romans 5:20) Some of us need more grace than others. Some of our children do too!
