I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.

I Am Found In You by Steven Curtis Chapman
Just Like the Rain
By: Ron Edmondson Friday, January 14, 2000
As the rain and the snow come down from Heaven, and do not return to it withough watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth. It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:10-11 NIV

The farmer knows about rain. He understands fully that rain is necessary for the survival of his crops. I have never known a farmer who didn't closely monitor the weather looking for rain.

In the Biblical days in which today's verses were written, there were many farmers. Today, most of us depend on the supermarket to keep us fed. As long as the shelves at the local market are full, we have plenty to eat. In Biblical days, if it didn't rain, you may get rather hungry. People had a real appreciation for rain.

Understanding this fact helps the illustration God uses here make more sense. God is saying that just as your very existence in life depends on adequate rainfall to water the crops, and to keep the store shelves full, so does your life depend on His word. God's word is the substance of our sustainment in life. God's word is the provision which keeps us in perfect peace.

Maybe it also helps us better understand the desire we should have to know Him more. Just as the farmer prays for rain; just as the farmer depends on timely and adequate moisture for his crops to survive; maybe you and I should yearn for the filling of His word so that we may abundantly produce the "fruit of the Spirit".

Perhaps our hearts desire should be for the watering of our souls with the precious word of God!
