Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Matthew 5:4 NIV
We are a society that has lost compassion! "Wow, Ron, way to hit us in the face right from the start!"
Ask anyone who has ever served in a retail or other customer service position and they will tell you that today's consumer can be quite difficult. (I am choosing my words carefully.) Serving as an officer of the PTO at our son's elementary school, I have had the rare "opportunity" to hear first hand parents "demanding" fairness for their child. Drive the streets of most any town and you will find some (perhaps many) less than courteous drivers.
Our nursing homes are full of older people who are rarely visited by family, friends, or even the church. Visiting the sick at home or in the hospital is a dying event.
We are a society that has lost compassion.
So what does this have to do with the verse for today?
Jesus wept at the hurt He saw in the friends and family of Lazarus. He had compassion on a crippled person, or someone wallowing in sin. Jesus gave of Himself for the comfort of others. There is an attitude there of mourning, of suffering for the sake of another, of love.
If we are to be like Jesus (and that should be our goal), we need to pray that God will give us this characteristic of Jesus; that we would become less concerned with our own pleasures and concentrate more on the welfare of others.
Let us pray to that end!
