“You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.” Exodus 20:4 NIV
God’s Word is clear that idols come between us and our relationship to Him. This week we will look at exactly what that means and how it affects our daily lives.
A search at Dictionary.com gave me some interesting insight into this word “idol”. An idol is defined as: an image used as an object of worship; a false god; one that is adored, often blindly or excessively; and something visible but without substance. That gives us four definitions from which to consider various verses of Scripture this week.
In the Ten Commandments God says we are not to make for ourselves any idols. That means there should be nothing in our life that is an image to be used as an object of worship. We are to have no false gods. There is nothing to be adored blindly or excessively apart from God. Finally, there should be nothing visible that is without substance that takes precedence over God in our lives.
We’ll talk more about it as we continue this week, but please consider this question: Does anything in your life fit the above definitions? Is there anything coming between you and the God of Creation?
Lord, help us to put your first in all that we do!
