But those who fail to develop these virtues are blind or, at least, very shortsighted. They have already forgotten that God has cleansed them from their old life of sin. 2 Peter 1:9 NLT
One of the reasons we hold on to sinful patterns is that we fail to understand or we forget that when a person becomes a Christian, a transformation has occurred. Something old has been made new. Death has been replaced with life. Failure has been replaced with victory. Jesus died not only to pay the penalty for our sins, but to give us power over sin in our life.
I you are struggling with a personal sin it is not because God has left you to defend yourself. God has equipped the believer with the resources to fight off sin. Please understand, I am talking from a theological perspective not from personal experience. I’m not suggesting that I have mastered sin and have no remaining sin in my life. I haven’t.
What I am saying is that I realize that God has equipped me for battle with the power of sin. The power of righteousness, through the person of the Holy Spirit living in me, is strong enough to battle sin and the temptation to sin and His power is available to me. I don’t need a few more rules to keep me from sin. I need a greater reliance on Christ’s strength. My method of attack against the evil ways of temptation is not to get stronger on my own, but to surrender fully to God and allow His strength to be my strength. Only then can I have true victory over sin.
