I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.
I Am Found In You

He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them in his shepherd's bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd's staff and sling, he started across to fight Goliath. 1 Samuel 17:40 NLT
Have you heard the story? David killed Goliath. He picked up five stones, headed into battle, and with one fierce blow to the head, the nasty giant fell dead to the ground! All my life I’ve wondered about those stones. Why five? Was that number important? I’ve heard lots of theories; that David knew Goliath had four brothers is probably the most common. I just want to play with a theory of mine for a moment. I think David took five, because he was afraid he might miss the first time.
Who David…afraid? Surely not! This is the hero of the story! Everyone else was running from Goliath, but David stood up to the giant and the giant fell. We know that David had periods of fear, however, because he wrote about them in the Psalms. He once wrote, “When I am afraid I will trust in you.” (Psalm 56:3) In fact, fear is one of the most common threads through David’s writings.
Many years ago a pastor said something to me that changed my life forever. He was among the top four or five most important spiritual influences of my life. He said, “Ron, you have the potential to be a giant killer. Go kill some giants.” As a man in his young twenties, that encouragement challenged and changed my life.
Over the years I’ve tried to kill some giants, but it’s not been without my share of fears. During this series, as we begin a New Year, let’s examine the fears of our lives; those giants that need killing, that are keeping us from accomplishing God’s will for our life.
