I pray that your love for each other will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in your knowledge and understanding. Philippians 1:9 NLT
Yesterday I introduced a concept that as we mature in Christ we will become less self-centered and more other-centered. The Christian is to be a person of love if we are to follow the example of our Savior. We must be like John the Baptist, decreasing so that Christ may increase in our life. As that happens, we will learn to obey the greatest commands of God; to love Him and love others.
I often try to use this as a filter for my life and my actions. Whenever I’m going to do something, or say something, I try to consider, is this about simply pleasing me, or does it please God and bless others. Often I find in self-examination that I really am a pretty selfish person. That realization allows me to invite God to further mold my heart into a heart He can use; a heart that love others and puts others interests ahead of my own. (That practice is wonderful for a marriage.)
This is going to be a difficult assignment, but if you really want to experience Christ’s work in your life, try applying the filter to your life. Before you make a decision, maybe before you say something, ask yourself this question: Does this action/statement build up me or build up others? It could possibly do both, so another question might be, does this action/statement do anything to hurt another person? Does what I’m about to do or say show God’s love to others?
God, help us to show Christ’s love to others.
