I may not see in front of me, But I can see for miles around when I look over my shoulder, and Lord, it`s clear. You`ve brought me here, So faithful every step of the way. What can I do but follow you, For You are the Way, the Truth, the Life, And You`ve promised never to leave me, My Savior, my friend, From beginning to end.

I Am Found In You by Steven Curtis Chapman
Finishing Well, Part 12

But whether or not their motives are pure, the fact remains that the message about Christ is being preached, so I rejoice. And I will continue to rejoice. Philippians 1:18 NLT

Yesterday’s devotional talked about checking the motivation of our heart and passion for doing the work of ministry. These principles work equally as well, however, in our everyday life. Today, I want to clarify something. Even if you find you have no motivation or improper motivation to do the things God has called you to do, you still probably need to do them. A lack of motivation is not an excuse to quit doing the things you are supposed to do.

Yesterday I used the illustration of changing dirty diapers on a baby. If you have a child in diapers in your home, even if you’ve lost your motivation to change them, you still have to change them! There are many items in your life and in the ministry that have to be done even when the passion subsides.

The struggle then becomes an effort to renew the passion. When the passion dies or when you lack the motivation to do the things you need to do you must first ask God to renew your passion. There may be some things that you aren’t called to do. Stop doing them! Don’t wear yourself out, because that will only cause you to lose passion and motivation for the things you should be doing. None of us were meant to do everything.

The central question then seems to be an issue of what has God called you to do. Do those things, keep the passion alive, and be very limited about taking on other responsibilities for which you have no passion.
