Comfort, comfort my people, says Your God. Isaiah 40:1 NIV
God wants to comfort His people. He really does.
I have heard so many people saying “I don’t feel God” or “I don’t feel close to God”. I must tell you very plainly, it is not because of God’s lack of concern for you or His lace of a desire to offer comfort.
While talking with a person recently, I kept hearing her talk about how awful her life is right now. I listened for a long time, but then it was my turn to talk. Since she admitted that she wasn’t close to God anymore, I began to talk with her about her relationship with Christ. The fact was that she didn’t really have one. I wanted to ask the question “how do you expect to have a close relationship with God if the two of you never talk?”, but I resisted.
Let me express something that I learned soon into the meeting with this lady. You cannot be comforted if you do not wish to be comforted. Unless you want God to comfort you; unless that truly is your desire, then your heart will be closed to His comfort and you will remain uncomforted. I know that sounds like double-talk, but it is the truth. God will not force His comfort upon you. As strongly as He desires to give you comfort, He will not make you accept it.
Do you need to be comforted? Will you allow God to do the comforting? Until you open your heart to Him exclusively you will fail to receive the comfort He wholeheartedly desires to give you.
