“Let your conversation be always full of grace.” Colossians 4:6 and “Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:13 NLT.
The next step in healing awkward relationships is to apply lots of grace and forgiveness. 2 Peter 3:18 says, “But grow in grace”. We are to continually be applying grace to our life and the life of others, even to those who have hurt us the most. If you and I want to live in the community of God the way God intended us to live with other, we must be willing to humble ourselves. We even have to be willing to swallow our pride if needed.
Do you know what grace is? Grace is something you don’t deserve. Grace is never deserved. If you did something to deserve it then it wouldn’t be grace.
Who in your life needs to receive grace from you? They don’t deserve it, they probably shouldn’t get it. In fact, they may even deserve retribution, but because so much grace has been given to you, it’s what you should give them.
Perhaps the best thing you can do for someone is not to ignore them or to wish them ill will, even though that’s what you would like to do. Maybe what they need more than anything is for you to offer them something they don’t deserve. Maybe you need to give them some forgiveness…a kind word…maybe a just a hug. Maybe a little bit of grace is what they need most from you.
Sure, it will be uncomfortable and your kindness might get rejected. It may cost you big to give grace, but grace is always expensive to someone. It cost Jesus His life.
Will you be willing to extend the grace and forgiveness that God has extended to you to the person who has hurt you the most, so that you might have a hope to improve the awkward relationship?
